If your pregnancy test is positive, an ultrasound may be scheduled to determine what options are available to you. Your options will be based on how far along in pregnancy you are and the viability of your pregnancy. Confirming a pregnancy and reviewing your choices is the safest way to make a healthy, confident decision. Birthline offers free, limited ultrasounds at our facility and offers referrals* at a local center free of charge.

What is an Obstetrical Ultrasound?

An ultrasound scan is a device that uses sound waves to create an image of the inside of your body. By performing an ultrasound, we can determine how far along in pregnancy you are, if it is a viable, intrauterine pregnancy (inside your uterus, and not an ectopic pregnancy), and if there is a fetal heartbeat.

In an ultrasound examination, a transducer is pressed against the skin and directs small pulses of inaudible, high-frequency sound waves into the body. As the sound waves bounce off of internal organs, fluids and tissues, the sensitive microphone in the transducer records tiny changes in the sound’s pitch and direction. These signature waves are constantly measured and displayed by a computer, which in turn creates a real-time picture on the monitor. Ultrasounds do not hurt and are very important for determining the next steps in your pregnancy.

*Birthline has referral arrangements with another women’s pregnancy center that offers our clients ultrasound scans to confirm their pregnancies and to help determine how many weeks pregnant they are if we are unable to schedule with you. The ultrasound scans are provided free of charge and are completely confidential.
